Diabetes causes numerous complications, which affect the lives of countless people worldwide. One of which is Candida infection. A problem not openly discussed, due to the nature of the disease that makes it an unlikely and gruesome topic for normal conversation.

Nonetheless, despite the embarrassment, this sensitive topic must be discussed in order to avoid Candida infection and improve a diabetic’s quality of living. An individual with a problem balancing his or her blood sugar will have the same problem managing yeast growth.

With the increased amount of glucose secreted by the body, an imbalanced chemical reaction is caused, which affects the performance of the immune system. The result is an abnormal yeast growth, and infection is inevitable.

Controlling a diabetic’s diet can prove to be an overwhelming task, and at times, they are unable to do this by themselves, regardless of the fact that diet is one of the major factors that manages the disease. Controlling one’s diet will help avoid the complications brought about by diabetes. An unstable system creates a number of emotional, mental, and physical problems. It also affects the way we behave socially. Constantly dealing with this disease is an enduring endeavor, which can cause diabetics to be more irritable and withdrawn towards close friends and family, the people who are able to provide immediate care and support.

Although not serious, Candida infections have been known to have serious effects on people, in many different ways, both physically and mentally. There are a lot of people, who are already stricken by the disease, find it devastating to be afflicted by another. The experience can prove to be excruciating and too much to bear.

A douche may seem to be a good idea before consulting a doctor, but by doing so, it might change the result of what your doctor has to observe during his or her examination. Using a douche may alter what needs to be seen, which in turn, may lead to an incorrect diagnosis. You may be diagnosed with a simple Candida infection, and fail to further detect a more serious problem.

You can have your doctor make a prescription or advice treatment or medication, that you can get over-the-counter, which works best for you. Your doctor may even suggest you try a much cheaper medication. Diabetics have to be cautious with the medication that they take. A wrong combination may ultimately lead to disaster. A chance that should not be taken lightly.

Follow the doctor’s orders, and take the full treatment. Complications may arise, due to not completing the necessary treatment and medication, whether it is over-the-counter or prescription. Symptoms may appear to improve or completely disappear, not knowing that the root cause has not been cured, resulting in additional treatment and more time in recovery. Infection may reoccur if treatment is prematurely ended. It is of the utmost importance for diabetics to be under the correct medication and treatment, take the right dosage, and follow the duration in which suggested by their doctors.

It is true that diabetics are not the only people who can contract Candida infection. Due to their special needs, specific attention to their health care must be dealt with on all levels.

It is common for new parents to worry about their newborn child, they are happy when their baby is both happy and healthy. On the other hand, when they start to suspect that their infant is having health problems, they start to stress more about it.

There is a common health problem that most newborn is affected with, and this is called oral thrush or Candida infection.

The good news though is that oral thrush is considered as a minor illness, which can be easily treated. Other than that, the next biggest issue when it comes to infants is when they start to develop diaper rash.

Oral thrush or Candida infection is something that an infant may naturally develop. Fungus that causes a thrush is a native inhabitant of one’s body. These thrive mostly in dark, moist and warm area of our body. However, sometimes, it can also be due to the mother’s vaginal Candida infection that was passed on to the child at birth.

It is easy to spot signs of thrush, when a parent examines their infant’s mouth they will instantly notice oral lesions or filmy mucus like that covers the surface of the child’s mouth. Other signs are when you wiped away phlegm, and then the tissue underneath may look irritated, red or sore. It is advisable for parents to consult with their pediatrician the moment that they see these signs of Candida infection or oral thrush. Although such infection can be treated easily, we just have to bear in mind that our child’s immune system is not yet fully developed, and that it may lead to a more serious problem in the end.

Normally, when your physician is examining your child’s Candida infection, the physician will automatically ask the mother about her health. This is a tool for them to decipher where the problem originated. If the physician finds out that the mother is indeed infected, both mother and child must be treated. Some physicians will recommend over the counter medicines, while others will just give you a prescription.

Bear in mind that when an infant starts to develop Candida infection or Thrush, the parent must take precautions and ensure that said infection does not spread. You must ensure that you impose proper hygiene, disinfect and sterilize your child’s pacifiers, feeding bottles etc.

Added to this, all family members must be able to practice washing their hands and cleaning themselves before they touch the baby. Breast feeding mothers must also clean her nipples on a regular basis (i.e. before and after feeding the baby). If it is possible, avoid using cloth towels and just replace it with paper towels. This is to avoid transferring bacteria from one person to another. Make sure that you use a soap that is anti-bacterial when washing your hands. These must be practiced for at least two weeks (after the start of mother and child treatment).

Lastly, remember that Candida infection may actually appear like a rash (from constant diaper use). If you are treating it with ointment for more than 48 hours and yet no change is happening, then you are certainly dealing with Candida infection. If this is your child’s case, it is advisable that you go and seek your pediatrician’s help the soonest possible time. While babies that are breast-fed and are on antibiotics are the ones who is more prone to having Candida infection.

Oral thrush is also known as yeast infection; this is a fungal infection related to any of the Candida species. Said infection thrives inside the mouth’s warmest temperature, and this is the same area that is always wet. With proper diet and medication, oral thrush is curable. Most babies and the elderly are the ones susceptible to this.

We all know that diet is a big contributing factor in helping our bodies to function well, this includes strengthening our defense mechanism against illnesses and it keeps the overgrowth of yeast. Aside from diet, the following factors can also influence yeast’s overgrowth:

• Dental plates
• Antibiotics
• Pregnancy
• Contraceptive pills
• Endocrine conditions
• Chemotherapy
• Iron deficiency
• Skin diseases

To diagnose properly oral thrush, scrapings and skin swabs are needed. This procedure invades the tissues that cause a white transparent substance; this actually covers the tongue, the mouth’s roof, inside the lips or the throat. Sometimes, it can look like a yellow coating, although white is its common color.

Cravings for bread, sugar and alcohol can be traced back to yeast. While babies are not able to tell you verbally about their cravings, there are some indications that show oral thrush infection.

There are two other symptoms; these are fatigue and digestion problems. However, both can be indications of other type of illnesses as well. Rashes may also accompany yeast infection. Some may appear as red and shedding patches on the tongue or palate; while there are others that look like a discolored tissue; and on the corner of the mouth some red cracks may appear.

Do not be surprised if babies are especially irritable and uncomfortable when they have one, this is highly attributed to fact that they feel a burning sensation in the inside of their mouths. Oral thrush causes great discomfort for breast feeding babies.

Most babies suffer from yeast infection that was transferred to them at birth. While some babies acquires one when the mother is a carrier of Candida infection. This happen through breast-feeding (i.e. one with infected nursing nipples, Candida infected breast/inside the breast).

On the other hand, family members or a house pet can also pass on a Candida infection. But then again, there is a greater possibility of contracting one through the mother (who is constantly with the child). Both mother and child need to be checked and treated for Candida infection. If the mother is treated and yet the child is not (or vise versa), then there is a tendency of the said infection to be passed on repeatedly. Bear in mind that the more the infection recurs, the harder it is to treat.

Added to this, babies may potentially lose their appetite for food if they continuously suffer from uncomfortable thrush. This greatly stops them from swallowing with ease. If this is left alone and untreated, the child could potentially suffer from other illnesses because of their unhealthy and unhappy state. If you start to notice that the tongue of your child is covered with a milky white substance or other area inside your child’s mouth, and that even thorough cleaning is not helping at all, be sure to check with your pediatrician for a possible Candida infection or thrush. Remember, a happy and healthy baby only means a happier mother.

Yeast Infection During Pregnancy – What To Do?

A woman who has chronic vaginal Candida infections might get use to the reoccurring infection, no longer give it much thought, and may no longer be bothered by it. However, this changes when she has vaginal Candida infection during her pregnancy. The cause of alarm is understandable. The infection is close to the uterus.

The frequency of vaginal Candida infection significantly increases during pregnancy, compared to normal days without child. Added stress and changing hormones are responsible for this increase in frequency of vaginal Candida infection. During pregnancy, the quantity of estrogen produced is increased dramatically. Due to this increase in estrogen, the vagina produces a larger quantity of glycogen as well. The added amount of glycogen is the ideal environment and breeding ground for Candida.

Normally, it may be habitual for women to use over-the-counter medication for the treatment of their vaginal Candida infection. This story changes once they get pregnant. A trip to the doctor is required to find out if there are no complications, due to the pregnancy. It is also important to know whether these over-the-counter medications can harm the child or not. Doctors usually do not give prescription drugs, to pregnant women, for treating Candida infection. They usually recommend the use of anti-fungal cream purchased over-the-counter. In some cases, the anti-fungal cream fails to work, another trip to the doctor will be needed. Due to the pregnancy, the body can react another way to the cream, which is frequently used.

Contrary to popular belief, Candida infection will seldom have effect on the child inside. If you have Candida infection once you give birth, there will be a chance the child will develop oral Candida infection, while it goes through the mother’s birth canal. There is no need to worry though. This can easily be treated.

Precaution Measures

There are several precautions a mother must follow, during her pregnancy, to prevent Candida infection.

Use plain white toilet paper, and avoid using toilet paper with printed patterns. Wear loose and comfortable clothing; clothing that is well ventilated. Avoid wearing spandex underwear, and use plain white underwear made from cotton instead. Wearing pantyhose is out of the question. Not using scented powder and lubricants will decrease the chances of vaginal Candida infection. Avoid taking prolonged bubble baths. After taking a swim, immediately hit the showers, dry off, get out of the wet swimsuit, and change into dry clothes. Using water-based lubricants, in place of petroleum-based lubricants, is recommended. Try sleeping without underwear. Having a diet with anti-Candida agents will help counter Candida infections as well. An example of which is yogurt, which contains live culture. It may not directly improve the health of the vagina, but having a healthy diet will pay in dividends, when it comes to overall health.

It is advisable for pregnant women to apply an icepack on the infected area, to help relieve the discomfort. In addition, pregnant women should soak themselves in a tub of cold water mixed with baking soda. Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is has been to have anti-fungal properties.
